Rain

May is the second driest month of the year in Las Vegas so the odds of rain on Mother’s Day this year are probably less than getting those free spins on Strip slot machine! In fact, it has only rained twice on May 12th since 1937. The last time was only 0.02” in 2001 and that was tied for the most it has ever rained on that day. It did rain in 2008 but it wasn’t enough to measure. So to say this particular day is often dry it an understatement!

Temperatures

This part of May things are really beginning to heat up. While the normal high temperature is still under 90F (87F), four times it has been over 100F. The highest ever was in 1996 at 104F. The first 100F day is usually in May but averages the 24th - after Mother’s Day. Last year (2023), it was right at 90F. On average May 12th is 90F or better 51% of the time. On the cold side of the stats, three times it has failed to get out of the 60s for highs. The coldest day was in 1961 when it only got to 67F.

The nice thing about May is even if gets hot during the day, it still cools off very quickly at night. The normal low temperature is 60F. Six times in history lows dipped into the 40s but this hasn’t happened in 35 years. The coldest was set in 1963 when it got down to 45F.

Conclusion

Happy Mother’s Day! I hope if you’re taking mom to Vegas I hope wins a big jackpot. Either way, the weather is usually beautiful, though sometimes a bit hot. Rarely is it cool enough for a jacket during the day but certainly in the evening you might need one. It’s still a great time to visit the nearby parks like Valley of Fire or Red Rock Canyon if you’re going to do some hiking. Just be sure to plan on doing it the bulk of it in the morning and bring plenty of water. Don’t forget to book a reservation if you’re taking her out to dinner because this is a busy day for restaurants.
